With a surface of 8300km² Crete is the largest island of Greece and the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. The island is about 250 kilometer long and it's main roads measure about 550km in length. The longest North-South connection is 60km in width and at lerapetra just 12 kilometer in average. The number of residents is close to 600.000 in total of which a third lives in the three main cities of the island: Crete's capital city Iraklion, Chania, and Rethymnon.
